Description:

A hearty homemade bread bowl, perfect for serving chili or other soups

Yield:

8 bowls

Ingredients:

1 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F)
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons dry yeast
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon water

Instructions:

1. In mixing bowl, combine water, sugar, and salt.

2. Add flour and yeast (start with 2 cups of the flour). Stir and then knead to make a smooth, slightly sticky dough. Knead for about 5 minutes. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes

3. Grease the outsides of eight 6-ounce glass custard cups (oven-safe). Place cups upside down on ungreased cookie sheets.

4. Divide dough into 8 equal pieces. Pat or roll each piece into a 5-6 inch circle, on a lightly floured surface (or oil your hands and just form the dough in your hands). Shape dough over the outsides of the greased cups. Allow dough to touch cookie sheet, but not to curl under the edges of the cups.

5. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes or until slightly puffy.

6. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees F. Mix egg yolk and water; brush gently over the bread bowls. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until bread is done and bowls are golden brown. Remove from oven and immediately, carefully remove bread from bowls. (I used oven mitts, since bowls and bread are very hot.)

7. Cool bread bowls upright on wire rack. Serve with chili or soup of your choice! :)

Homemade bread bowls

I use the bread machine to make this dough (dough cycle). These bowls are easy and really dress up a simple meal of soup!

Very good, very easy

I tried these for the first time today and they are very good, very easy, and gave such a creative touch and new look to my chili. Whenever I make chili I usually make white flour tortillas with them, well other than the rising time, this was quicker to prepare.
Instead of making 8, I made four. I had about a 1/2 spoonful of honey left in its jar so I poured the 1 cup of water into that in the beginning to allow the honey to dissolve in it, poured it right in mixing bowl as your recipe states. I could taste the touch of honey in the bowls. I have added this to my list of dinners for my monthly calendar. Thanks a lot!

Holds up great

I like how these hold the soup very well. I just pulled out the second half of the bowls from the freezer this week to bake up. I rolled the dough out and froze the discs on a cookie sheet and then placed them in a ziploc. To thaw I just placed them on top of the greased custard cups on the counter. After they thawed I squished them down and let them rise and then baked as directed, they turned out great the second time as well. Freezability is a big plus!

Easier than I thought

This is another recipe that I kept putting off making becuase I thought it was too hard. Boy was I wrong! I doubled the recipe, because I thought they would be too small made over custard cups, and put them over our regular-size bowls. A couple of them stuck and tore because I didn't grease the bowls well enough, but were still quite edible. :) Everyone loved them! They tasted wonderful. Since they were so large, we couldn't quite finish both our creamy chicken broccoli soup I served in it and the bowls. Next time, I'll follow the recipe. :)

Bread bowls

I made these for lunch today to put hamburger stew in. My family loved them and since it makes 8 I made 4 and froze the other 4 dough balls to use at another time. They worked so well my husband ate all the stew then refilled the bowl and ate both stew and bowl. It made for a fantastic lunch!

Makes dinner FUN!!

Boy did we enjoy these! My youngest helped me roll them out and my middle son kept checking to see when dinner was served (reg. time hon) I filled them with the Spicy Chicken Chili and my husband said something about "Keep making these" as he ate more. All my guys really, really enjoyed this. Thank you so much for such a fun dinner. Staci
