Review and giveaway: The Money Saving Mom's Budget by Crystal Paine

The Money Saving Mom's Budget book

Giveaway details are at the bottom of this post!

The Money Saving Mom's Budget is a fresh, inspirational book to help you take charge of your finances and get more for less! From "cut the clutter" to "never pay retail", Crystal outlines simple budgeting guidelines and practical ways to make the most of what you have, whether it's time, money, or possessions.

I've been friends with Crystal for many years and, naturally, have read her blogs from the start. I admit to wondering how much new content would be presented in her book The Money Saving Mom's Budget.

I was delighted to find that her book does not read like a compilation of blog posts. ;) It's more "meaty", covers some things in-depth that are not really discussed on her blog, and is just plain encouraging! I also love the real-book format (rather than an ebook) so I think it's definitely worth the $11 to get the book!

One of the more radical stances presented:

"I believe everyone should use coupons. There. I said it. Wait. I take my statement back. If you are one of the .0002 people in America who has never touched food unless it was grown in your own yard, you make toothpaste out of tree bark, and use cloth toilet paper, then I'll exempt you. But the rest of you? You're nonexempt." (p. 86, The Money Saving Mom's Budget)

Ouch. Okay, so I do use a few coupons. At Costco. ::cough, cough:: And when I make my semi-annual trip to a store like Wal-Mart or Target, I usually have a few coupons in hand.

But how realistic is big coupon savings regularly for a larger family that buys little processed food or toiletries? The one-time frozen vegetable deal at Target is just not enough to convince me that with coupons, I can regularly get 10+ pounds of organic frozen veggies for less than $11/month, which is what I pay at Costco. (I share more reasons for doing most of our grocery shopping at Costco in this post.)

I'm probably just coupon-impaired, because Crystal says on page 87, "...you can save at least $25 to $50 for every hour you invest in strategic shopping." About 20 percent of the book discusses couponing and "the drugstore game".

I especially enjoyed the chapter "25 ways to lower your grocery bill without using coupons". Some great, practical tips like "shop every other week" (YES!) and buy in bulk (YES!). :)

Toward the end of The Money Saving Mom's Budget, Crystal reminds us to look at the return on our investment when trying to find ways to save money.

"Personally, if I'm not saving at least $20 per hour by implementing a particular frugal practice, then I'd rather invest my time elsewhere. Of course, this rule doesn't apply if it's something I really enjoy doing." (p. 143, The Money Saving Mom's Budget)

While $20 per hour sounds rather high to me (we don't earn $20/hr. in our household), it's definitely worth considering whether it's better to do something ourselves or to pay for convenience. :)

Perhaps a good exercise would be to list things that can be done "more frugally" in order of greatest ROI to least ROI, to help figure out what should be top priority.

Buying ketchup? Sure. Throwing a load of laundry in the dryer? Okay. Cooking dinner? Not optional. ;)

The Giveaway (5 winners!):

In exchange for honestly reviewing this book, I received a pre-release copy of The Money Saving Mom's Budget. I'll also get one of the final copies after it's released in January.

I'm giving away that copy here! Update: Crystal just emailed and said I can give away 5 copies here! Yay! So there will be FIVE WINNERS instead of just one!

To enter, just leave a comment on this post with one of your favorite money-saving tips, and (if you're not logged in) be sure to include a way for me to contact you if you win! :)

Giveaway is open through midnight (PST) December 31, 2011. Canada and U.S. only, please. Five winners will be chosen using random.org and The Money Saving Mom's Budget book will be shipped to the winners in January, 2012.

Try not to use my gas dryer. Hang laundry on the clothline in the summer and in the winter I put them in for 5 minutes then hang them up around the house. Keeping the humidity out of the basement adding it upstairs. I turn off the heat around 8am. By 2:00 when it is freezing is a great time to workout. Furance kicks back on at 4 it is warm when my husband gets home.

Money Saving Tip

This is boring, but it's the one that has probably saved me most at the grocery store: make a menu! Make a menu, go through your menu and make sure you have all ingredients needed for the entire menu, and only then go to the store and buy. If I don't plan, I buy so much more. I've read her blog for years (since Biblical Womanhood). I honestly don't believe I can save as much as she says with coupons, but I also don't have time to spend on it. I work while my kids are at school and want to be with them the rest of the time. But if I weren't working I would probably try harder and also try to hit more than one store. I admire the way they plan and stick to their plans. Most of us could learn from that!

One of my favorite ways to save money that takes very little effort (all up-front) is to call your utilities (phone, internet, etc.) and badger them until they finally reveal their bare-bones options to you. Most won't advertise lower options, but for example, my internet was halved ($50/month down to $25/month) when I kept asking specific, pointed questions about lowering it, and they finally shared an option that halved the upload speed but kept the download speed the same. Pictures and videos take a little more time to upload, but browsing the internet is the same speed.

Organizing my pantry

After organizing my pantry, I can see exactly what I have to make meals and what I need to buy to fill in. This has saved me money.
dewittab@gmail.com

Once a month shopping

Once a month shopping has saved us A LOT of money!! Most things like butter and milk can be frozen and thawed later for use.

Butter!

I refuse to stop using butter, despite sky-rocketing costs to my budget & my arteries. However, since it is cookie-baking season, in most recipes (except spritz and shortbread) you can substitute butter or regular flavored Crisco for half of the butter called for. Crisco is much cheaper. I'd rather save the delicious butter for my waffles! mardeka@aol.com

Our money saving tip - cut

Our money saving tip - cut your meat quantities in half in recipes. When you make a casserole, use a 1/2 lb of meat rather than a full pound. With all the other veggies/goodies in the dish you won't miss it, and you'll get two meals out of that meat instead of one.

Buy on sale & stock up

I find that there are seasons in life where I do not have the energy to coupon. I'm just exiting one of those seasons (having a new baby), and hoping to start back up. However, one thing that I always do is to buy meat while it's on sale and stock up. I have certain target prices that I will not buy meat over and if I find it under I buy. Then there are certain lower prices that if I find it marked down to I will stock up. Recently I found a bunch of Laura's Lean Ground Beef marked down to $1.99/lb, regular price $5.99/lb. $1.99/lb is a decent price on regular ground beef here....so I definitely stocked up on that!! It saves me money in the future by never having to pay full price on meat!

Seriously? I think realizing that the amount of meat my husband and I were consuming was overkill was the best thing we've done for the budget.

I second the vote for library use....

Using the library has saved my family hundreds of dollars every year. Many of my homeschool materials are rented through the library **for free!!**. We also get books, magazines, CDs, and DVDs. Our children love to attend story time where they get to do crafts weekly. We've also attended several special events like puppet shows and book bashes. We really spend very little money on "entertainment" because we get it all for free at our local library!
We live in a largish city, but spend so much time at our local library branch that they know us by name! :-)

But since that money saving tip was already here, another way I save money is by keeping cookie dough in my freezer. By making a large batch and freezing half, it keeps us from wanting to spend money on pre-baked cookie packages. We can easily have fresh baked cookies that are not only cheaper and taste better, but are also much healthier!

Bountiful Baskets

I've been saving on veges. and fruits by buying them through Bountiful Baskets. Thanks for the review. I'm own of those people who isn't persuaded to use coupons, except like you at Costco or an occasional trip to Target. We buy so many things organic (that have no coupons that I have ever seen). I tried buying the paper, but never got enough coupons to pay off the paper. I've read Crystal's blog from the beginning, but just haven't been able to make couponing work. I was also wondering if the book was worth buy, since I've read the blog for so long. Thanks for answering that question.

Cleaning...

At our house, we use homemade laundry detergent, homemade cleaning wipes, we keep the house at 68 degrees and wear our favorite socks (yea!) and we only use one car.

We use to use two cars and make multiple trips into town, but now I stay at home unless it's an emergency and my husband brings home anything we might need from the store.

We also bought the Berkey from your website, so now we're not wasting money on bottled water. And it tastes so yummy!!
:)

I'm ready to get a copy of the book!! I'd like more tips on what I can do to save time and money.
Thanks!
Jen

Favorite ways to save!

A few of my favorite proven ways to save money in our family are using cloth diapers, making homemade laundry detergent, using white vinegar as our laundry softener, and menu planning. I like to use coupons whenever they are available for the items I buy, but since we don't eat a lot of boxed/processed food, that doesn't happen on a regular basis.

I'd love to read Crystal's book because I know there are areas of my life where I'm overlooking ways to save or just not being as efficient as I could. Thanks for offering this give away, Tammy!

saving money

I like to shop once a month at our local Amish bent and dent stores, then when I am unloading everything I make a list of what I have been able to purchase and make my menu plan for the month off of that list. As the items that can be found at the store change every time I go I make the list as I put away because one month will vary greatly from the next.

I then just put the few items I need from the regular store to finish off the meal on the right hand column on that same page. Instant grocery list.

Making a menu is definitely

Making a menu is definitely the best way for us to save money. Couponing in Canada is hardly what it is in the US. And I don't buy the processed junk either, so couponing is pretty much non existent for me. I watch flyers for sales, and plan everything out before I go. That's as good as it gets :) Americans should realize how truly blessed they are with grocery prices, even without couponing!

Kids Consignment Sales

I buy a lot of my kids clothing at consignment sales and then re-sell the clothes at said consignment sales after they have outgrown them. Great way to save! tarasnook@ gmail dot com

Budgeting ideas, money savers!

I'd love to win a copy of Chrystal's book. To save money don't have a cell phone plan. My husband's cell phone is provided and paid for by his company. I have a $29 prepaid cell phone and I buy 1 $100 minutes card (giving me minutes for .10 a min) about twice a year. I'm a stay at home mom and 2,000 minutes a year is more than enough for me. The bottom price of a cell phone plan is $39.99 a month before taxes (so closer to $45 a month-if you can even still find this plan) So I save at least $340 a year that way.

Freeze extra suppers

I like to make double or triple of some easily freezable dinners so I have something to eat on busy days. Lasagne, Quiche, spaghetti sauce, some rice dishes, etc. Buying something ready-made is much more expensive and not usually as healthy.

Stock up when the price is good, especially on things you will not use more of (shampoos, toothpaste etc. and pasta, rice, beans etc.) It's not a good idea to stock up on chocolate. :-)

Great Giveaway!

I'm so excited that you get to giveaway 5 copies of the book instead of just 1! I hope I get a copy... :o)

One money-saving tip is to shred your own cheese. It's especially great if you can get the blocks on sale, shred them all at once, and keep it in the freezer. I don't really even like the pre-shredded cheese any more; doesn't seem to taste as good. :o)

Hello

One of the ways we save money in our household is by limiting how much we spend on family outings. Instead of eating out or going to the movies, we rent movies from the library, make our own favorite "copy cat" meals and make use of free family activities in our area.

One tip would be to bath a toddler in the baby tub, placed inside the big tub...saves a lot of hot water. And they actually have fun in the baby tub! Mine was flat bottomed, so it worked. Not sure if this would work with one of those newer sloped baby tubs?

Favorite Tip

Of course you have to make sure store policy allows this, but a lot of stores allow Buy One Get One coupons with a Buy One Get One sale. You "purchase" both items and get them both free, excluding applicable sales tax. I feel like a kid on Christmas when that happens.

Pay With Cash

Paying with cash and using an envelope system keeps me on track with our budget. It is so much easier to see where you are budget-wise by looking in the envelope, vs. swiping the debit card every time you need something! Those little swipes add up, and before you know it, you are off-track. Using cash keeps me accountable continuously.

In our three years of marriage, we've always had to live frugally (though even if we didn't *have* to, I think we would!). Using cash has probably been the single most helpful thing we have done to save money.

Tip

The money saving tip I use most often is to never shop without a menu plan and detailed shopping list (and a full stomach also helps!)

Going Diaper-less (early potty training)

I live in China (thus if I win a book it will be sent to my sister; I've preordered the kindle version but I think this book would be a blessing to her as a new wife) and infants start potty training as early as a week. I waited til my son was seven weeks because I thought it was crazy (I'm American and have only lived here six years). It's a bit of work in the early weeks but it worked well for our family.

I know this certainly isn't for everyone, and many Western people don't agree with the practice, but Chinese people don't really buy diapers (there are no coupons and they are pricey) and only use cloth diapers (aka old cut up tshirts) for a few months. It saved me money and most importantly, time. Haven't washed a diaper since my three year old was 5 months old. Am going to do it with baby #2 next summer.

So, there's my money saving tip for what it's worth :)

This is great! I live in

This is great! I live in the US but lived in Costa Rica in the past. I am trying this but if you have any tips on getting from catching about 1/2 of the poops and some pees to going totally diaper less that would be great. I am using diapers buy my 4 month old tries to tell me when he needs to poop. I just don`t know how to get from here to no diapers. Also my 3 year old still wears diapers to bed and does not even wake up if he leaks and gets soaked. Any ideas? I am so glad to see someone else doing this.

Infant potty training

I started at 4 months with my son and plan to do it again with my next baby. We live in Montana, but know several families around the U.S. that do it. It makes so much sense.

Chinese Potty Training

WOW! I have never heard of potty training so early! I am curious (even though we are out of the diaper stage) and I'm sure there are many others who would like to know more! Could you explain that a little more indepth?

So many good tips!

We cloth diaper and save huge doing it! And we utilize the farmer's market and can and freeze like crazy since our yard is tiny and we can only grow a bit of food in it...although we keep trying to squeeze more in!

Never go into a store without a fistful of coupons :) I hate paying full price for groceries!!!!

Money Saving Tip We Use

I shop each week according to the ads, what I have already on hand and my coupons. I shop at the local Aldi's to see if any of the items can be bought cheaper their than at the other places (even with a coupon). You bag your own groceries there but the prices are worth it. I then go to Walmart and match any items they carry that the other stores have on sale. I was not taught how to budget growing up so have learned as I went - the book would be a great asset.

spice blends

I make most of my own spice blends for cooking! soo much cheaper than those expensive packets or small bottles!

Shopping less!

As you mentioned in your post, buying in bulk and going to the store only when I am running low on fresh foods helps me to save money by stopping those impulse purchases!

Yard sales

My husband and I have six children. For all of their lives, I have purchased the majority of our belongings at yard sales and thrift stores. Thanks for offering the giveaway! :)

We shop around at garage sales to find high quality things like stainless steel colanders and a cast iron skillet that we needed rather than purchasing an overpriced new item. We definately found it was worth looking around a little, and getting something of really good quality that someone else didn't want anymore.

Menu planning

We do a lot of things to cut our spending. The single largest money saver for us is menu planning. I can easily save around $200/month just by taking about an hour (usually less) to write out some ideas. $200/hour! That's a HUGE hourly rate! Don't buy lettuce - buy a packet of seeds for $1...

...then plant it, and get your money back several times over in salad makings for the rest of the summer! There are hundreds of seeds in a dollar's worth envelope of lettuce seeds, which is one of the most minimal time and effort taking plants to grow. And it really doesn't take that much space to grow a few heads of lettuce. Keep plucking the leaves, and the one seed will regrow itself for awhile, before getting seedy. Of course, expanding your garden to other varieties will be of great benefit as well. :-)

Always Make a List

One way I save money is to make sure I make a list ahead of time of exactly what I want to buy. That way, I don't even look at other items and impulse buying isn't a problem. The other strategy that works well for me is to just shop as little as possible. If I'm out shopping, I'm sure to see things I want, but don't need.

My frugal tip is buying beef

My frugal tip is buying beef from a trusted farmer in your community. We purchase a quarter of a cow for roughly 2.00 per lb. That is 2.00 per lb for porterhouse steaks! Ground beef at the supermarket is running well over 2.00 per lb here. With buying from a local farmer, we know that the cow was grass fed with no growth hormones and had a good life which is more than we can say for the supermarket mystery meat.
kjmacke@etczone.com

Dry beans

One of my favorite money saving tips is to cook dry beans instead of using canned. I love doing this because the percentage of cost savings is huge, dry beans are simple to cook, and they taste so much better too. A slow cooked pot of pinto beans makes "beans for lunch again" something to look forward to! :)

Repurposing leftovers!!

Repurposing leftovers!! Works best in the winter when soup is eaten often. :)

"Sale Today" @ the meat counter

I like to get out early sometimes and hit the fresh meat counters at a few of our local stores. Most of the time I can find meat that has been marked down because of it being at its sale by date. It will have a big red sticker saying "Sale Today". When I buy it, I come home and package it and stick it in the freezer. If I come across a bunch of ground beef, I go ahead and fry it up, cool it and then stick it in freezer bags. One mess instead of two or three.
Thanks Tammy and Crystal for the giveaway!

Menu planning and using up

Menu planning and using up all food we buy is a great moneysaver, plus having a few "easy" things ready, such as already made taco meat, in the freezer to pull out when we are busy with the kids' activities, etc.

Grocery outlets

My favorite way to save money is by shopping at grocery outlets and discount grocery stores (like Aldi's). It's great for getting staples and other things I can't find cheaper even with a coupon!

jackierwood83 at yahoo dot com

Grow your own herbs

I grow my own rosemary, basil and thyme, all of which will cost you several dollars each for a tiny package at the grocery store. They don't require much room, can be grown in containers and, the more you trim, they grow. I have plenty for my cooking needs and to share with my friends and family. Also, if you're in a southern climate as I am, citrus fruit trees are a tremendous money saver over a period of time.

We started using cloth diapers, but have realized how much "throw away" stuff we buy. SO, we have switched to un-paper towels and more rags instead of paper towels. Taking Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University class is our families biggest money saving tip! His passion and wisdom and encouragement makes everything else fall in to place - you learn contentment with what you already have, he motivates you to become "gazzele intense!" to meet your financial goals and opens your eyes to the joy giving to others can bring. After taking that class, I have began couponing, menu planning and asking myself "Do we really NEED this?" and spent lots of time in prayer thanking God for what we DO have and asking for wisdom to help our family become debt free. The BEST 100 dollars our family has ever spent was taking FPU!

Saving $$$$

I've always been a frugal person after reading Tightwad Gazette shortly after having my son 23 years ago. So after being laid off almost 2 years ago, I really had to go back to the beginning. I always line-dry my clothes. How much $$ is wasted by running dryer? Always wash FULL loads of clothes or dishes. Stockpile, stockpile, and stockpile as many products as you can! Use stores that double coupons to be able to get cheap or free products.

Saving $

My best tips for saving $ are making your own dish soaps, using vinegar for rinse agent and general cleaning, line drying clothes, and using local library for books :) I also save the children's clothes for the next child :) With 4 girls that saves A LOT of $ LOL Of course, I cap it to a certain size box. I only have so much space :)

We don't pay to watch movies. I keep a running list of requests for DVD's from our local library. When they don't have something that we want, I can always find a free Redbox or Blockbuster Express code online.

Money Saving

We like to live a frugal life style therefore there are many things we do to save. Like many others have said menu planning is a must, Im not sure i could function without one. We also do haircuts at home, buy used clothing, when needed make all of our household cleaners and laundry detergent and rarely go out expensive entertainment like movies.

Need to learn to save

I need to figure out how to be more frugal when it comes to budgeting. This book would be a great win.

I buy my meat at cash & carry, (resturant suppler) and cut it up myself. The cuts of meat there are much more flavorful than at the local market. And are even cheaper than Costco. I don't mind cutting them myself as I have them exactly the size we need. Then i Vaccume seal them. It is one of the things in my kitchen i use almost daily.

Ways I save money...

I prefer to cook from home whenever possible, but the largest way of saving money lately has been to buy a whole beef which we split with my brother-in-law. We purchased it at a fair, so the money went to the local 4H group and we ended up paying 2.99/lb overall (including the butchering) you cannot find burger under 3.99/lb and the taste of this beef is so much better you save more money by not having to add so many spices. Best investment/money saver we've made in a long time.

Money Saving!

One way I save money is by taking my calculator to the store and using CASH only. I get a certain amt every 2 weeks. I take that, multiply it by our tax (7.8% here) then subtract that from what I have. That way I know EXACTLY how much money I can safely spend at the grocery. I found a calculator at the Dollar Tree that I can wear around my neck! NOTHING goes into my cart w/o getting put into the calculator. Not being able to use my credit cards at the store keeps me focused on getting ONLY what is on my list. Thank you for the opportunity to win one of these great books!!!!

Saving Money

We tend to keep our thermostat close to 70-72 degrees year-round. I can't stand frigid air conditioning (read 68) in the summer, and in the winter we just try to wear long-sleeved shirts/sweaters and socks/slippers to keep a little warmer. For a four bdrm house with a full basement, our electric bill (which also operates our well pump) is pretty darn low.

How I save money

I buy all of our kids clothes at consignment stores; I rarely buy anything new. I also spend 1 hour prior to each grocery trip to clip & gather as many coupons as I can. I've cut my grocery bill in more than half each month...spending $250/month for a family of 5 instead of about $550!! We put the rest in savings each month!
(my email address is mandy_harmon@yahoo.com) thanks for doing this giveaway!

Money-saving tip

I buy very little soda (Pepsi, Coke, etc.)and when I do it's as a treat. I drink unsweetened ice tea instead brewed from teabags that I can buy locally for $1 for a box of 100. Better not only for the budget, but better for the waist-line.

Money Saving Tip

Stack in-store and manufacturer's coupons for more savings.

Stacegoe@cox.net

we majorly cut the amount

we majorly cut the amount of ground beef we put in recipes. We gradually started doing this and now use probably a fifth of a lb instead of a pan. We up the veggies (frequently pureed squash!) and don't even notice anymore. :) But don't try to do that all at once, cause you'll really miss the meat that way!

Coupons and additional 10% off!

I shop for groceries on the first Wednesday of the month, using all the coupons that will expire before the first Monday of the next month. Our grocery store offers an additional 10% discount to people who are over 55 (thank you hubby) on the first Wednesday. I make my menus for bulk cooking (pulled pork, marinara sauce, chili, enchiladas, soups, etc) and buy everything I need for those meals. I usually save between $70 -$125 every month! The other weeks of the month I only have to shop the perimeter of the store for fresh fruits/veggies and dairy products. p.s....I have purged my pantry of everything over 5 ingredients so I am not buying pre-packaged and processed foods. My biggest savings is on house cleaning items, diapers for my grandson, and beauty items (which I would normally NOT buy at the grocery store).

Menu planning and keeping a price book for stock-up sales

I love menu planning and each menu has it's own accompanying grocery list so when it comes up in rotation (I usually try to have 6 weeks worth to rotate for each season) I can just shop my pantry and freezer then hit the stores.

I also keep a price book, which I update seasonally, to use when comparing prices for sales. I have found that my Super WalMart usually has the best price on just about everything so I compare other stores' sale prices to WalMart's regular prices and also determine which store I should shop at with my coupons on a specific item to get the most bang for my buck (and effort!)

I would love to win this book!

money saving tip

I ALWAYS buy anything I need after the season and use it for the next year instead of buying things full priced. Like Christmas decor, summer and winter clothes, I wait until they g on sale, find a store coupon and head on over for cheap cheap finds. I probably wont ever change this habit as it has saved my family so much!

How I save money

When I buy clothes for my kids, I always shop the clearance section. I think about what I might need for the seasons coming up. I usually always buy their clothes ahead of time, so when we need them they are already in our closets from when I bought them clearanced the year before.

MSM book giveaway

Rethink WHY you do most everything. :)

We try to stay home more, run errands less, cook simply, and keep simple (read:not full) closets.

For me, saving money has also meant determining when it is a waste of time, money, and resources to drive across town to get brownie mix for 50 cents a box (using coupons.) I think I'm in your camp, Tammy, because extensive couponing and playing the drugstore game didn't equal savings for us. We don't use many expensive products, anyway, so all the hoopla involved in redeeming ECBs for hair products/toothpaste just seemed, ultimately, rather ridiculous. I buy toothpaste for about $1, and we use a tube a month. I'm okay with that. :) I'm back to my favorite savings strategy, which includes shopping at 2 stores (Aldi and one other...depending on loss leaders of the week), eating simply at home, and using up what we have in our pantry.

Longtime reader of MSM as well, and sure that the book will be very inspiring.

Thanks for the giveaway!

Besides not purchasing much

Besides not purchasing much in the way of processed foods we purchase our grains, oils, honey and a few other items in bulk from Azure Standard. The grains are then stored in 5 gallon food buckets. We also joined a CSA that delivers organic produce practically to our doorstep for almost the price of "regular" produce. Having items delivered, with no additional deliver cost, keeps us out of the stores and helps control our food budget!

Stay out of the store!

Since my husband and I share a car, I don't have the option of zipping out to grab all of the newest deals. While this means I don't always get to snag some great steals, it also means I'm not in stores to be tempted to buy things that we don't really need. So, we end up saving on gas, car insurance, and limited spending all due to our car situation. It's a win-win!

Do your homework. I do tons of things to save small amounts daily (coupons, sales, deals, re-purpose, cook all meals at home, etc), but we've had quite a year of all appliances breaking beyond repair (they are OLD). Fortunately, many of the items were covered under insurance for replacement, as they were ruined in our house flood. They gave us full replacement value in a check to go replace them. By doing hours of research, deal comparison, etc. We made sure we got the best price available on each item, and saved a couple thousand dollars! The insurance company said the extra $$ was ours as they replaced the value of what we lost, the money I saved was ours to keep. It saved us when our water heater suddenly went out! It would've taken a long time of small savings to equal what I saved by doing my homework on the big ticket items!

I'd say my tips would be: plan a menu (sometimes we have weeks where we try to make all our dinners out of mostly what we already have on hand), I use coupons (drug store and grocery/Walmart), shop sales for other things (like Joann Fabrics), and buy online saves a lot esp. for gifts. We also make most of our food from scratch and buy in bulk!

Shop Smart

If we need something from Walmart or Target, I try to find it at Big Lots for cheaper. I also go to thrift stores for clothes and some household items. We recently found a mailbox post just after our mailbox had been vandalized and it was a fraction of the cost of what the hardware store would charge. So, basically, it should be a habit to try cheaper stores first before shelling out full price. Also, find the discount days at your thrift stores to really reap the savings, then make it a habit to go on that day when you can.

I am a single mom of three and staying with my parents right now. Making menus and knowing ahead of time is a great way we have saved. Also coupons and on sale items. I also love going down the clearance isle at walmart. Also walmart price matches and takes competitor coupons so i only have to go to one store.

Money saving tip

I buy my dog food at costco. Not only is the Kirkland brand cheaper, but it is decent quality dog food. With 2 big dogs, the savings really adds up!

Planning my menu off the grocery sales

I save money by making my menus based off the weekly grocery ads. If chicken is on sale, I guarantee we'll be eating some kind of chicken dish. I tend to base the fresh fruits and vegetables I purchase on the grocery sales, too. Buying only what's on sale gives us a variety of fruits and veggies each week and saves us money for other essentials in our budget.

meal plan

My best tip making a meal plan and sticking to it (that's the hard part).

it seems simple enough but for our family learning to keep to our meal plan each week is always a task I am working on. I've even gone as far as grouping the non refrigerated ingredients i need for each meal together at the beginning of the week that way i have NO excuses for not cooking (although I'm always able to find a few :)

Reusing Envelopes

I reuse the payment envelopes that come in the bills. I write my grocery list on the outside along with my ad matches (I shop at Walmart) and put the week's coupons on the inside. When I am done shopping I toss the envelope into the recycle bin!

I do alot of the things, these ladies have listed above my new favorite money saving tip is the grocery store game, I got from Money Saving Mom. Love it. On thanksgiving I got over $115 worth of products for less than $15. My Money Saving Tips

I'm an unemployed single mom of a growing teenage boy. Some ways we save money are by not eating out at all since I was laid off earlier this year. When I go grocery shopping, I ALWAYS have a list and I ALWAYS use coupons.
Thank you for all your great recipes and great tips.

Tip

At Halloween we purchase several packets of coupons from different fast food restaurants. You'll usually get 14 free item coupons for $1. Then when we are out and about Christmas shopping we can run through the drive-thru for a treat for our 6 children. Some restaurants offer these coupon books at other times like Valentine's Day too. a dot casalino @ att dot net

Drink Water

One of the things we do for health and to save money is just drink a lot of water instead of juice or soft drinks. Add some lemon or lime slices to a pitcher of water in the fridge and it is a healthy and frugal drink. We don't buy bottled water either, just use the filtered water from the tap.

Another tip is to adjust the temp in the home to help with the heating or air conditioning costs. We keep it a bit warmer in the summer and a bit cooler in the winter. Not so much that we are uncomfortable but a couple of degrees can make a difference.

contentment

over the years, the biggest money saver for me has been a commitment to contentment. sometimes this means not shopping at all...if we see it, we want it...so, if we don't see it at all we might just be better off - right? sometimes it means being happy with what i have or a less expensive alternative rather than wanting something new or more expensive. hence my van with 200K+ miles :) but it always means being thankful for what i DO have and remembering that we all - here in America - have more than so many around the world.

Don't waste

When we grow (or buy greens) we try to use all of it. Celery tops can be used in soups, beet greens can be tossed into salad, etc. Every time we have chicken or turkey, I boil the carcass down and make broth. I can make soup, potpie, etc, and freeze some for future use. Use all leftovers, and be creative. If we have small amounts of veggies we just can't use right away I put in the freezer, and once we have enough I make soup.

Vinegar and baking soda

I haven't read all the comments yet, but I'm sure I'm not the only one by far to suggest using vinegar and/or baking soda in place of expensive cleaners. I especially like that I don't have to worry about keeping the cleaners away from my little ones...and if I'm having to keep them away from the bottles, do I really want them touching surfaces that have the residue on them?

Bread

We were buying 2 loaves of whole wheat bread a week at $2.79 each. Now I make my own and spend maybe $1.00 per loaf. I almost always buy generic. Also, I look for stores that double my coupons. Wegman's doubles up to $.99. So, a $.75 coupons doubles to $1.50. That can add up!

Coupons

A lot of people don't think that coupons can save you money, but if you buy what's on sale and buy what you need to last between sales, you can save money for your grocery budget. Also, buying bread at our Dollar Tree helps. I rarely find it cheaper and at $1/loaf, I stock up and freeze it for my husband's lunch. cpjunkie@cox.net
