Making bread bowls

Making homemade bread bowls...

This week, I made some homemade bread bowls. I had actually never eaten a bread bowl, having only seen them in pictures. Here is the bread bowl recipe, which is easy and fun! I made some spicy chicken chili to serve in my bowls. Very yummy!!

Now Joshua says we won't want to have chili unless we also have bread bowls for it. I think he might be right! It made an otherwise very simple meal into an elegant affair. And that works for me!

I'm excited to make these again, since I didn't press the dough completely down to the cookie sheet, and as a result, some of the bowls have wavy edges.

Yehoshua (almost 3) thought eating out of a bread bowl was a fabulous treat! :)

tried tortilla bowls yet?

Those look yummy - and they remind me of tortilla bowls. I haven't tried it myself yet, but I understand you can press a warm tortilla into an oven-shaped bowl and bake it in the oven a short amount of time on high heat (like you would to make tortilla chips), and voila: a tortilla bowl shell for taco salad!

hmmm, might just have to do that soon! thanks for the inspiration!

peace of Christ to you,
Jessica

That's a wonderful idea.

That's a wonderful idea. Keeps from dirtying up so many dishes!!! :D

muffin cups?

I was wondering if you think this might work with the big muffin tins? Could I turn it upside down and do the same thing?

I also wanted to tell you I have been craving your chicken chili but we are out of white beans. When I saw this recipe I was too excited. (Yes it is sad when you get excited over chili!!) I will be trying it this week or maybe next. I have everything needed for this one! YEAH!! Thanks
Shorty

These look really great

These look really great Tammy! And I know how Joshua feels because we don't eat chili without making our bread bowls too! I like how yours are formed instead of baked and then hollowed out...hmmm, might have to change up my recipe a bit!

These look great! Thanks

These look great! Thanks for sharing! I will have to give them a try.

I've bookmarked this recipe

I've bookmarked this recipe to try it sometime. I'm wondering if I can use more wheat flour if it is freshly ground soft wheat...

Bread Bowls

Today, I put on a crockpot of chili and went to a friend's for the afternoon. I got home and whipped up these bread bowls and served the chili in them and they were GREAT! I made four of them on 10 oz. custard cups and they were wonderful. Thank you so much for the recipe. The next one I want to try is the pepperoni, but I will have to wait a little while to do that one. :-D

In Christ,

Mrs. M.

Yeay!

I have been looking for a recipe for this! This will go great with my beanless chili next week!

Bread bowls

This was such a huge hit at my house. I did not follow your recipe, Sorry! I used my regular bread recipe. My family loved them. My daughter who is 10 wanted to know how I came up with this idea because it was a good one according to her. I had to tell her where it came from. Thank you so much, now they want me to make them all the time. Thanks for such great ideas that impress my family. Your the best.

Homemade bread bowls

Thanks for the enthusiasm, ladies :)

Jessica, no, I hadn't heard of making tortilla bowls! Maybe tortilla bowls can be our "bread bowl" for during the Feast of Unleavened Bread that's coming up soon. :D

Anonymous -- about not dirtying so many dishes -- actually, I felt like making bread bowls dirtied MORE dishes! Because I had to wash the baking sheets, glass bowls, and then we set our bread bowls on plates, too! However, if I had made the bread bowls ahead of time, I could have washed the extra dishes and had fewer dishes to wash after the meal. :)

Shorty, I thought I had already replied to your question, but now I see that I never did -- so please accept my apologies for taking so long!! About using an upside-down muffin tin instead of glass custard bowls... I don't think it would work. The bread has to have enough space to rise. I think muffin cups would be too close together and cause the bowls to stick together. If it's any consolation, glass custard cups are fairly inexpensive and handy to have on hand. ;) Although I probably wouldn't have them except that I got some before we were married.

To the person wondering about using more wheat flour, I'm sure you could! A hearty whole wheat bread bowl sounds delicious! :)

Mrs. M and Anonymous, I'm glad you enjoyed them! And I think it's perfectly fine to snatch the idea and use your own bread recipe. :D
