We tend not to have many
We tend not to have many "chefs salads" with lots of ingrediants - every now and then we may have a chicken salad, but not often. Typically we eat baby spinach and red pepper salad - or romaine with tomato and cucumber and maybe pepper - or chinese leaf and orange segments in winter. Our basic dressing is always extra virgin olive oil and vinegar (always red wine with spinach; usually apple cider with other salads), salt and pepper, then mustard - usually dijon, sometimes wholegrain with spinach. With chinese leaf, we either just squeeze an orange over or use juice rather than vinegar in the dressing, and add honey too.
We're very dull.

Salad Toppings
Dear Tammy,
Our family loves to put fruit on our salads. Diced, with the veggies and dressing adds a bit of sweetness and variety of texture. Here is a list of items we put on our salads that was not included. Hope you enjoy!
With love,
Ruth, PA
diced apples
orange segments or mandarine oranges, drained
raisins
grapes
cooked pasta
chow mein noodles
crushed nacho chips
sour cream, taco sauce, and/or salsa on taco salad

salads
other toppings:
artichoke hearts, pimento, thinly sliced red onion
toasted pine nuts
our dressing is always 1/2 basalmic and 1/2 olive oil (we have a salad after the main meal every night - dh grew up on this)
Mmmm!
I love dried cranberries on my salads. I'm also a big fan of raspberry vinaigrette. I will go with oil and vinegar if I don't have nay oof that around. Cheese is another staple as well as sesame sticks and/or soy nuts. I do enjoy a good cucumber as well. We don't eat as many salads as we should but every now and then it's a good, healthy treat.
More add-ins
We usually just have tomato and dressing, only occasionally do we add hard-boiled egg or cheese. But some suggestions from other things I've been served with salad:
raw broccoli or cauliflower
dried cranberries (my mom did this with sliced almonds)
Salad toppings
Here a few things I don't remember seeing listed that we have put on salads, not all at once of course.
baby corn segments, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, snow peas, dried cranberries, nuts, sunflower seeds, sliced yellow squash and sliced zucchini
One more topping
One protein I like to add to my salads, whether at home or at a salad bar, is cottage cheese. It helps to make the salad not so dry without having to use extra dressing. Also, I always just thaw out my green peas by rinsing, drain and put straight on the salad.(unless I am lucky enough to have fresh) Is there a reason to cook the peas, or is it just a taste preference? Mmmm, thining about green peas reminds me of a green pea salad my aunt makes.... :)
Salad ingredients
I also like to add -
broccoli and cauliflower florets cut small,
cottage cheese,
edamame (green soy beans),
mesclin (mixed baby greens),
walnuts,
salad shrimp,
red onion,
green onion
feta cheese
sliced mushroom (fresh)
our fav dressing is just olive oil and either balsamic vinegar or red wine vinegar with a dash of salt.
We love meats on ours and ds
We love meats on ours and ds loves tuna on his or canned chicken (either as tuna salad or chicken salad or just plain on it) fresh green beans, snow pea pods, grated carrots, broccoli pieces, cauliflower pieces, pepperoni, peppercini, salami, assorted different cheeses (I LOVE feta!), crumbles up crackers (great when you are out of croutons!) dried apricots. I know there are tons of others too but cannot think right now!
Salad Topping
Tammy,
I love to have onion on my salad...purple onions!
Melinda
salad toppings
I know this is not healthy but I love those french fried onions (the ones you use for green bean cassarole) on top of my salad. Again, not healthy but soo good.
Azul
Some of my faves include Drained Mandarin Orange segments, Dried Cranberries, and Drained Pineapple chunks.
what about
Onions!
Salad ideas
A salad we like to have that's sort of 'fancy' is spinach mixed with field greens or mesclun mix, sliced ripe pears, crumbled feta cheese, and maybe some sliced almonds or other nut. Then I top it with this dressing:
1-2T Apricot jam, depending on how sweet you like it
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
vinegar, any sort, I have a pear infused white basalmic that works well, 2 T
Olive oil
I heat the jam a little to thin it, then add the other ingredients and whisk in the olive oil. I don't measure the oil so I don't know how much. Then I season with salt and pepper and pour over the salad.
We've done a similar salad with sliced apples, slices of cheddar cheese, and a dressing made from apple juice, apple cider vinegar, dijon mustard and olive oil. I haven't made any of these salads in long time.
I have one more that I LOVE, but others may not like it. Take 2-3 large oranges, peel them and slice in rings. Arrange the rings on a plate, top with thinly sliced red onion and chopped FRESH oregano. Then drizzle with olive oil, a little red wine vinegar and salt/pepper. Oh it is so good- somehow the flavors complement each really well. Can't wait till oranges are back in season!Hope this gives you some ideas :)
More salads
I love the orange and onion salad mentioned. I add spinach and use a homemade red wine vinegar dressing.
Other favorite combinations:
Endive, pecans, pears, blue cheese with a balsamic dressing or raspberry vinaigrette
Spinach, asparagus spears, goat cheese, raspberries, almonds with a raspberry vinaigrette
Tomatoes, cucumber, kalamata olives, feta cheese, fresh oregano, and fresh mint, with a lemon juice/olive oil dressing
Mixed greens, diced apple, cheddar cheese, walnuts, and cubed/shredded cheddar cheese with a balsamic vinaigrette
Layer tomato slices, sliced smoked mozzarella and fresh basil leaves. Top with balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt, and pepper
Salad Toppings
Let's see, I also like to have some cottage cheese w/my salad. Added protein and I'd like to think I don't use as much dressing w/that around.
I didn't see hard boiled eggs on your list but might have missed. I also like:
edamame
ground flaxseed
sweet banana pepper rings
HOpe these make your list!

Our three favorites
The three salads we make most around our house:
My most common (my hubby and kids don't eat this one) is spinach with feta cheese. Not even any dressing. The feta is flavorful enough on it's own.
Our family's favorite (even the little ones!) is spinach with sliced strawberries, sliced almonds, and raspberry vinaigrette. Sometimes sesame seeds if we have them on hand.
And our new favorite (daughter loves it but hubby won't eat anything with bleu cheese) is apinach with sliced pears and bleu cheese crumbles, and a sweet vinaigrette.
Can you tell we love our spinach? We almost never eat iceberg lettuce, because it's mostly water and doesn't give you nearly the vitamins and minerals as spinach, or romaine or leaf lettuces that are darker green. The greener the leaves the better it is for you.
salad ingredients
We eat salad often around here. Some of our fixings include:
onions (green, vidalia, or red)
green bell peppers
cheese (cheddar, mexican, mozzerella, feta, parmesan)
turkey
bacon
hotdogs (cut up)
tabasco sauce
broccoli
dried oregano
black pepper
garlic pepper
extra virgin olive oil (always)
balsamic vinegar
red wine vinegar
homemade honey-mustard dressing
diced chicken (any flavor, we use leftovers, too)
taco meat
salsa
crushed up tortilla chips
carrots
tuna fish
You get my drift. We'll put just about anything on salad. We belong to a food ministry and get a TON of bagged lettuce each week. We usually have salads for lunch 3-4 days per week.
more toppings
artichoke hearts
green cabbage
turnip roots
jicama
chinese cabbages
cold broiled fish
salami
boiled chicken
roast beef juiliened
crumbled grilled hamburgers
We love to add raisins,
We love to add raisins, dried cranberries, chopped apple (red or green), red onion, avocado, chopped walnuts or almonds, onions, Romano cheese and balsamic vinaigrette is the only way to go for us.
More ideas!
Pieces of orange
Strawberry slices
Whole toasted almonds
Small cheese cubes
Toasted sesame seeds/soybeans/walnuts/cashews
Beet greens
Swiss chard
Arugula
Mesclun
Fresh herb leaves
And here's a dressing recipe:
1/3c. balsamic vinegar
2/3c. olive oil
1/2t. garlic powder
1/2t. sugar
1/2t. salt
Kathleen
Another nice dressing..
...is just to put a dash of olive oil, a splash of lemon juice, and some sprinkles of basil/oregano/dill. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Kathleen
bean sprouts
Those bean sprouts are good in "Asian"-type salads, too. A dressing with garlic and soy sauce goes well.
Kathleen
Kinda Greek Salad
I only like salad one way, dark greens with feta cheese, cucumbers, real bacon bits , hard boiled egg slices and plain old Balsamic Vinegar.

bistro salad
I like a mixed greens salad, chunks of plum or on the vine tomoto, fresh, hot crumbled bacon and poached eggs. Top with fresh black pepper and either balsamic or lemon juice...this will mix in the bowl with the bit of bacon and the poached eggs for a delicious "dressing", Serve with either bread in the spring and summer or a broth based soup in the winter.
Raisins!!!!
In our house we eat a LOT of salads, and no salad would be complete without raisins!
They add a sweetness amongst all the savory ingredients that just can't be beaten!
Other salad fixings we can't live without: Chick peas, green peas (frozen, but run under warm tap water), garden fresh tomatoes, chopped avacado, sunflower seeds, bean sprouts, pickled beets, and mushrooms.

Let's see... My favorite
Let's see...
My favorite thing to do is make chef salad and what I usually put on mine is:
Chicken, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, croutons, sunflower seeds, cheese, green onions or chives (usually in with the chicken), garbanzo beans, kidney beans, and sometimes pickled beets. Oh, and of course some kind of salad dressing ;)
you may have already gotten these!
We love salads! We grew up eating alot of salad at home, but usually our salad was leaf or romaine lettuce, cut up broccoli (diced finely), tomatoes (served separately) cucumbers and dressing.
I do eat a basic salad, but I love ones that have mushrooms, sunflower seeds on them, slivered almonds, dried cranberries, sun dried tomatoes, bacon bits, not on all the same salad of course!
One that we served at a wedding recently was lettuce, field greens, sliced strawberries, slivered almonds, dried cranberries, croutons. It was served witha honey mustard dressing, but I ate mine with vinegar and oil dressing since I dislike mustard.
We always made homemade ranch dressing at home as that was the favorite and for Italian just did vinegar and oil dressing.
Another favorite was sliced lettuce, grated cheese, grated carrots toss with vinagar, oil , salt and pepper.
We loved diced beets on salad, not pickled ones, just cooked ones!
Another salad that is not with lettuce is Lentil salad
Salads!
We usually only use spinach and different kinds of Roamaine lettuce. )Iceburg has no nutrional value to it.)
In salads
Chicken
Turkey
Vidalia onions
Cherry, grape tomatoes (or on the vine)
eggs
carrots (diced, or shredded)
almonds
tuna fish (rarely, since I can't stand the smell of it)
We are limited to poultry and fish. Pork is not healthy at all. Seafood, ew, creatures that eat garbage yeah that's something I want to eat!! and red meat, just backs up into your colon, and sits for dayssssssssss!
perfect salad
perfect salad (in my opinion)
GREEN lettuce, the greener the better
baby spinach
shredded carrots
diced celery
sliced GREEN olives
sliced GREEN grapes
or
sliced strawberries
or
pineapple tidbits
or sometimes a little of all three
sliced fresh chives, the whole stick!
fresh chopped broccoli
chopped bell pepper
little bit of cheddar cheese, too much ruins it
crumbled real bacon
warm chopped freshly grilled chicken
homemade buttermilk ranch dressing (ice cold)
honey, it'll make you mmmm, mm!
Salad toppings
My husband enjoys the crunchy Chinese noodles that you can buy in a bag at any grocery store. In my current state of pregnancy, I don't care for them but they add extra crunch to your salad.
