Making banana pineapple bread with help :)

Eliyahu loves to help mix...

I somehow ended up with a number of over-ripe bananas on my counter last week, so the children and I made 4 loaves of banana pineapple bread, which I then sliced and packaged for the freezer. I try to have at least one sort of homemade baked goods (muffins, banana bread, healthy cookies, etc.) for Joshua's lunchbox each day, and having things in the freezer is so convenient!

Two little helpers...

I let Eliyahu mash the bananas with a potato masher (I did have to help at first) and then he continued mashing as I added the rest of the wet ingredients to his bowl.

I got out another bowl for Yehoshua, and he used a whisk as I added dry ingredients to his bowl. Then they both mixed in their bowls while I greased the loaf pans.

I combined the two mixtures, let Yehoshua do the final stirring, and divided the batter into the pans. Baking with two little helpers is never very relaxing, but they both had fun. :)

And then the clean-up...

Then it was clean-up time! Eliyahu absolutely loves helping with the dishes. He will stop doing anything else in order to come help, and he can hear the water running no matter where he is or what he's doing! He cries almost every time when the dishes are all done and I tell him he has to get down.

Yehoshua used to feel the same way about helping with dishes, but then Eliyahu "took" his job from him (Yehoshua tells me this very sadly!). I remind Yehoshua that while Eliyahu is helping with the dishes, it's the perfect time for him to build block towers or set up an animal zoo, since Eliyahu won't come around to disturb him. :) So, he usually plays quietly by himself. Being 9 months pregnant and trying to do dishes with two helpers is just not very easy... I can hardly reach the dish drainer! :)

Dishes

I also have to little boys (ages 4 and 2) who LOVE 'washing' the dishes... But it always seems to end in a disaster (water all over the counter, floor, themselves, the chair...)and they start fighting about it. Also, well the dishes are not really clean. (Q:Do you let them do it their way and then redo it when they're gone or do you stand by and instruct them on the spot? --no pun intended). Just wanted you to know that your an inspiration to me. I keep seeing in my head the pics of your little ones helping you and it encourages me to keep trying (although I don't know how you do it)... Keep showing us what you do with your kids. God bless you all. Helene

Dishes helpers

Let's see... I make them get a towel and clean up any water that gets spilled... and I am constantly telling them to keep their water-filled cups/containers over the sink and not over the counter! :)

Also, I am the one who actually washes the dishes. I let them bring a chair and they stand by the "rinse" side/empty sink. I wash the dishes and give them to them, and then I rinse them and put them in the drainer after they've played a bit. (Any breakable dishes get rinsed and safely put into the drainer almost right away.) So they're really (at this age) just playing with water and dishes, BUT it keeps them busy while I am washing and they love it! :)

And fighting... that's another reason to have one helper at a time. There really isn't room for two to stand on one chair, and then they tend to fight. :)

Wow I am challenged by your

Wow I am challenged by your motivation at 9 months pregnant. It is so easy to have our children play so that they are out of our way, much faster to wash dishes without them at our side--but not necessarily constructive time spent with them teaching and instructing. (-: Thanks for the reminder.

I just have to say

that your little boys are soooo cute! Those faces are just precious.

Baking with children

I really have to work on my patience with this. It is so hard for me when I just want to bake and get it done with and they want to watch, see and things spill and there is more mess, but I know they grow up and one day I will baking alone. I am not eagar for that day to come so I am thankful even though it is frustrating at times!

Great Job!

I love how you involve your children in your baking/cooking! Thank you for sharing the sweet photos! I have really been enjoying your site. :-)

banana pineapple bread

I recently made this with banana pudding mix instead of real bananas. I just added the mix to the dry ingredients. It was really good, very moist. I had the pineapple but no bananas, so I tried it.
