Chef's date

Grilled steak, mashed potatoes, and asparagus!

This morning, I took the boys over to my mom's house. She watched them for us while Joshua and I (and Ruth!) had a date. Joshua and I do spend as much time together as we can, but it's refreshing to occasionally have some quiet time together! :)

We're frugal (read: poor Wink) homebodies, but we like our cooking. So, we made our own "date" meal at home: leftover mashed potatoes (still yummy, of course... just easier than making fresh!), cooked asparagus and onions, grilled New York strip steaks, and red wine. What a treat! :)

The steaks were from Aldi, and were very good. We've only bought Aldi's steaks twice, but we've been very impressed both times. The wine was a special gift, reserved for the occurrence of a good steak, however rare that may be. ;)

It's still not "cheap", but we spent less for our meal today than we would have spent buying fast food, for sure. And what's not to love about talking and cooking together on a date?! :)

Sweet

Sounds like you had a beautiful romantic date!! I love times like that. Whether going out for dinner or just eating homemade food for our private candlelight dinner...it's always special!!

How sweet!

My husband and I do the same when we can. It's definitely more frugal to eat at home and much nicer than crowded restaurants with sub-par food. Glad you had such a nice time!

Sincerely, Lyn

Looks Yummy!

Tammy, the meal looks delicious. I'm glad you and Joshua had the opportunity to have your special meal together. I LOVE Aldi's myself and have purchased their steaks and roasts several times and have yet to be disappointed. I am going to have to try your asparagus recipe. I have not made it with onions. Another great recipe, I'm sure. :-]

What a lovely meal!

It's fun to have a date with your husband once in a while, and we love to cook together too.

Restaurants are overrated (and expensive).

How much do the steaks run?

How much do the steaks run at Aldi's compared to other stores? We buy our meat on sale and typically don't pay more than $2.29/lb for beef roasts/steaks, so obviously we aren't getting premium steak. Depending on what the price is though, I could see maybe getting some occasionally.....

This is me....

Didn't realize that I wasn't signed in. Also, I'll clarify that while we do have Aldi's in the area, I've never really shopped there, though I do know something about what it's like.

My husband and I have date

My husband and I have date nights at home too. The last time he and I went out, without our daughter, for a date was like a year ago. We really enjoy making a good meal, sharing some ice cream, watching a good movie, and cuddling ... usually more often than going out. We like our going out times to be whole family affairs :-)

We like eating out at home, too :)

For our anniversary this week, we opted to have a date at home rather than go out. Aside from the expense, our last few attempts at a romantic night out were flops due to loud fellow diners, strange servers, and servers that want you to finish up and leave so someone else can sit at your table!

So we used a portion of what we would have spent eating out to buy some special ingredients we can't normally buy, and had a lovely, relaxed meal at home. :)

My birthday was yesterday We

My birthday was yesterday We did the same thing ! I purchased what I thought would be a fancy restaurant meal and cooked at home. We had Tortilla crusted tillapia , clam linguini, corn in butter sauce, and I bought a ice cream cake ! Yes, it was expensive, but still way cheaper than a restaurant ! It was fun, and no , guilt !

What a treat!

What a blessing to have your mom nearby so you and Joshua could have some "couple time". :) So rare with kids, let alone 3 little ones!

We've had steaks from Aldi before and each time are impressed with the quality! When they first started offering meat (years ago - back when I still lived with my parents), it wasn't very good so I quickly learned not to buy it. Many years went by and as a married woman, I decided to try again - much to my husband's delight! The ribeye steaks we had were so good, he couldn't believe they were from Aldi. :)

How nice

That is so nice you could have a date night.Your dinner looks really good too.It is so nice when you can spend time alone and enjoy each other's company.
