Ruth's Quilt

Ruth's baby feet on her quilt

Kelly asked if I would share about the quilt which has ended up in many of my photos of Ruth. Ruth's quilt is easily the most beautiful and treasured fabric item I've ever owned, so of course I'd love to share about it! :)

The front of my raw edge quilt

This quilt was made for/sent to Ruth by a friend of mine and her twin sister. I was speechless when I opened the box that came in the mail... and pulled out this quilt! I have never, ever had something so beautiful before. I loved it the minute I saw it!

This quilt is called a "raw edge" quilt or "shaggy quilt". I had never seen that sort of quilt before, so I looked it up online. ;) Anyway, the first thing I noticed about the quilt was that the edges had a sweet old-fashioned look -- crumpled and slightly frayed! :)

This is what the back of the quilt looks like! Soooo comforting to snuggle under. Ruth sleeps beside me at night, so that means I get to use her quilt, too. And we do use it... multiple times each day! :) The quilt isn't quite the size for a single/twin bed, but it's definitely a big crib/toddler size (it would be plenty large for Yehoshua to use, and he's 4).

A close-up of the back of the quilt. I love quilts (who doesn't?!) and someday I'd love to get a few supplies so I can make quilts. My past attempts -- completely hand-sewn with only a scissors, ruler, needle, and thread for supplies -- don't even compare to this quilt! I feel so blessed to have something so lovely. :)

Thanks Tammy for sharing. It's so pretty that I can't believe it. I love the vintage looking fabric. The Earth tones make it neutral but the pink roses and ruffles make it so feminine. What a special treasure you have- and a nice friend! I have a lot of vintage chenille bedspreads so I'm going to make a bed skirt for my girls and use some of the pieces to make a quilt. I'll share it with you if I ever complete it. LOL

What a beautiful quilt!!! That is precious. My middle child held on to her 'blankie' until she was 12; she would kill me for sharing that. It meant a lot to her. And it was so cute that she still slept with it and loved the smell of it.

These quilts are so fun to make! I am in mid project with one right now. It is mostly a "neutral" one, although a few squares have flowers, but they are blue flowers. I am making mine from very low level flannel I bought at Walmart. My grandma however made one from VERY high quality quilting fabric that is just amazing. It was before I was ever pregnant and she had read about babies liking primary colors. It is bright and loud and I just can't get enough of it. Every baby should have one of these. She also made my mom a larger one for her couch to cuddle under in beautiful purples, turquoises, and pinks. Really fun.

I love love love the color combination of Ruth's quilt. It makes me want to start another one. As a side note, I think that these are a great first quilting project. There are just two sizes of squares and the seams are very forgiving. I mean, my grandmothers is perfect- absolutely straight everwhere. Mine not so much, but when all is said and done will still look quite nice. Next time I expect I will be better at it.

I think the side you say is the back is really the front!! I think it's supposed to show when used:)! I could be wrong though.

Yes, the 'back' is suppose to be the front. = ) I love rag quilts. Lydia has a horse one that Lindsey and Erin made for her.

That is beautiful! What a blessing to have such great, thoughtful friends :) I'm sure you (and Ruth) will cherish that quilt for a long time.

I really want to get into quilting, or something, so I can make things like that for my future children. There's nothing quite like a blanket or something else to snuggle that's been handmade. My husband has a lot of those.. his mom makes quilts and stuff like that for her family. She does most of the sewing by hand, which is crazy! I could learn a lot from her, haha!
