Deluxe Chocolate Cake

While we've admittedly had some two-layer cake disasters, the "disaster" part has been with the art of layering rather than with the cake itself, thankfully. ;) This homemade deluxe chocolate cake mix recipe is our favorite chocolate cake -- soft, moist, and dark!

You can make up the dry cake mix ahead of time, and just add the eggs, oil, and water when you're ready to make the cake. Quick, easy, and so delicious!

Cake

I have been looking for a homemade cake mix for a while. I did not think to check your site. I printed this same recipe off of a copy cat type website just a week or so ago. It is the same but yours has a little more cocoa. I am glad to know it is good. I have been meaning to try it but have not. Does extra cocoa just make it more choc. or do you think there is another reason?

Oh man!

That looks sooooo good! :) I try to only make very light desserts during the week (homemade ice cream sandwiches, pudding parfaits, etc) but this will be on the menu for our next Sunday Supper after Father's Day! I love a good chocolate cake! I'm making your oatmeal spice cake on Father's Day for my hubby (he LOVES coconut) and I can't wait to try it! Oh - and thank you for posting your cake disaster! :) I love that you do that. Makes me feel so not alone in my cooking mishaps. Have a great day, Tammy!

frosting question

which recipe did you use for the frosting? i have a choco frosting recipe, but its more like syrup, it just runs off the cake.

Hi, I'd also like to know how you made the frosting. Also, if I subsituted the shortening with butter would that be ok?

Frosting

We made a chocolate frosting we really like, but it has a egg in it, so you would have to wash the outside of the egg or use a fresh one from a hen or skip it, but I usually use it.

Anyhow, otherwise i just make a chocolate buttercream type frosting. Frosting is so simple and a cinch to make!
The cake looks great.
We like to make chocolate beet cake here or crazy cake too for chocolate cakes. Another favorite is Black Midnight cake cut into 4 layers and layered with whipped cream.
