Hot dog buns? Yeah, right!![]() I hope you're all ready for Tammy's Recipes: Breads Edition. I know, I know... wrong time of year to be baking bread every day. I should have ordered my grain mill last Fall. ;) Today I tried to make hot dog buns. I can't stand hot dog buns from the store, but Joshua likes having that perfectly shaped bun for hot dogs instead of wrapping a slice of bread around it. We made the dough for our homemade wheat bread. By the way, when you're in any sort of a hurry, it's best to NOT use flour from the refrigerator or freezer. Yeah, I knew that but somehow forgot... until the dough was taking three times as long to rise. At least we didn't forget the yeast, which was my first thought! Finally it was time to shape my hot dog buns. I already knew not to make them too tall, after my experience with hamburger buns that were like round balls and twice as thick as they should have been when they came out of the oven. My hot dog buns didn't come out too tall, but they were too big all around. Like a hot dog bun meant to hold two hot dogs. ![]() Or a sub bun. Oh well, they tasted great! But for future reference: bread dough for one large loaf of bread will make 6 sub buns or 12 hot dog buns. ;) We usually get 8 hot dog buns out of our one-loaf bread recipe. I could probably get 10 just as easily - and it would really help with the same problem you're having (the gigantic-ness of them). ...but I bet it would work really well for a nice, fat, grilled, Italian sausage! We make hamburger buns from our home ground wheat all the time. It took a little experimentation, but my mom finally learned how to make them just the right size. And the taste is much better than store bought. We will have to try doing the same with hot dog buns. ~Ali I have tried to make them twice now and each time they come out too big! I can make hamburger buns perfectly but somethng about the dog buns I just can't get! Anyway I love your site and congratulations on your mill and baking bread! You will love it! We make every baked good imaginable with our white whole wheat flour and it is perfect! We love it! Jennifer http://familyofthreefornow.blogspot.com/ I've always wondered about making hotdog buns from my bread dough. If you have time (ya, right!), could you show us some pics of the process? At least what the formed dough looks like at the start, then after it's done rising (right before baking)? That might help avoid HUGE buns or other mistakes... Only if you can, of course. Loving the site~ *Michigan Momma* I've wondered this too and I'm with MommaJoy-if you get a chance to photograph and explain the process that would be wonderful! I made hot dog buns for the first time about 3 weeks ago. My husband loved them and asks me to make them more but they turned out rather strange looking and not uniform in shape at all. I wasn't real sure how to form them so if you have a certain way that you do it I could use some pointers. They really were so much better than what you can buy at the store. Thanks, Tammy. I check your site about once a day. Darcy My mother was a cook in a school cafeteria many years ago and she made homemade hotdog buns for the whole school. All of the bread was homemade. Anyway she had my dad make her a cookie cutter type thing in the shape of a hotdog bun, she rolled out the dough and used her cookie cutter. She said it worked like a charm. I've never made hotdog buns before but I do make hamburger buns and it's much easier to roll out the dough so it doesn't get too large. I have a large circle cookie cutter that I use. What a great idea!! I am going to get my husband to make me one this week. Thanks for posting about this. I had never thought about it, even though I do use one for my hamburger buns. They look great for the sub sandwich :) Post new comment |

I was wondering where you ordered your wheat from. I LOVE all this talk about making bread and grinding your own wheat! Exactly where I'm at in my life! Thanks for doing the "experimenting" for us! :)
