Growing like... a garden!

We may have has a slightly rough start, but our little garden is growing beautifully! It's so exciting. :) We watch it every day... pulling weeds, admiring the green little tomatoes and peppers that are starting to form... :)

Gardening is rather addicting and we're already planning what we want to do next year -- like expand the garden, get an earlier start on things, and don't try to plant in mud. ;)

Our little garden

Tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, and some (poor-looking) onions. We're thinking the onions aren't doing as well because there was grass on that side when we started. (The rest of the garden had been compost/brush and no grass.)

We went on a walk this morning and admired several lovely gardens in the neighborhood... There's something so nice about growing food.

By the way, my mom is up to her ears in work from their garden this time of year. She has always taken the summer off from homeschooling due to garden work, since the majority of her days in the summer and early autumn are spent doing food from their garden. I'll answer more of your questions about that in another post, though. :)

Tammy,
Your garden is coming along wonderfully. Your tomato plants are nice and tall! I feel the same way that it's neat to see things grow and I'm looking forward to having some produce to help the grocery bill. I have a smaller container garden but every bit is a real help.

Take care, Lyn

You've probably heard about this. :>) I've read that if you know ahead in the fall where you want to plant in the spring, you can use newspapers to kill the grass. I think you put down several layers and wet them . . . maybe add in some compost on top to hold it down? Then in the spring, the grass is dead and the newspapers have turned into compost and you're ready to go!

We started big with our garden and haven't outgrown it yet. I think the only thing we have about ready now are peas.

We started our first garden and it hasn't done much of anything after almost 2 months, but we started with all seed and did nothing to prepare them. Maybe we should have soaked them or tried to get them to sprout first? We live in the South so sun and warm weather isn't the problem.

Looking good, Tammy! I love gardening, seeing the plants come up and grow and then harvesting the fruits of your labor. Very rewarding. I'm always planning what I'll do next year too. :) ~Tanya - mama to 5 :)

Just found your blog, and boy what a treat it's been for me to read your posts! We are a homeschool family, and this year have our first garden using the square foot garden method. I really enjoyed your post where you showed how to use mason jars for cupboard storage. Why haven't I ever thought of that! It's a great idea, and one that I'm going to transition to immediately!

Your tomato plants are so big! Mine are lagging this year for some reason and I only have 2 little bitty tomatoes out of 12 plants. I'm hoping more will spring up. It's been so cool and rainy here in NW Ohio, but your plants don't seem to mind!

Hi - your garden is looking good - we have a small patch more the size of yours than your parents!! Wow they really do have some work.

Our vegetables seem to be much later - we are in Northern Ireland so I guess that's why!
