Starting over again: We're moving!!!

I think we're still getting over the shock of it all, but WE'RE MOVING!!! Joshua called me this afternoon and let me know that he was offered and accepted the job in Seattle, so we'll be heading out there soon. As in, about 9 days from now. Can this be real?!

Want to hear how AMAZING God is?!

Joshua is from the Seattle area, and we have always talked about the possibility of relocating there some day, but there seemed to be so many hurdles to jump through to do so, and we had given up on the idea for the time being.

Then last week, Joshua got a call from one of his friends out there who knew of a job possibility in the area. Joshua figured he might as well send in his resume, so he emailed them. They liked the look of it and requested a phone interview, so we figured he might as well at least learn more about the job.

The phone interview went well, and an in-person interview was requested. We spent a few days praying and going over the numbers for salary vs. increased living expenses, along with weighing allllllll the pros and cons of a new location. There were soooooo many different factors and whether we stayed here or moved, there were some big gains and some big losses!

But we decided a face-to-face interview was the logical next step while we continued thinking about it. Joshua went to orbitz.com to purchase tickets and found tickets for the exact times and days that he wanted, at the airport we wanted, with only 8 days' notice -- for $149. We were thanking Yahweh and telling ourselves "At least we'll only be out $200 and not $500!" ;)

Joshua went in to work that day and was going to ask for the next Friday (today) off of work, but before he could ask, he was told that there was no work that day -- it was scheduled as a "down" day. So, the day he would have had to take off for the interview -- it was already off!

Fast-forward a few days. We're still waffling over all the pros and cons of moving. Then Joshua goes in to work and is told that he will be layed off by December 1st at his current job.

Was God planning this, or what?! So then it became an issue of moving and having a job or staying here and not having one (the job market is not very good here in NW Ohio... we know this from first-hand experience unfortunately!) and we both decided that if he got the job in Seattle, we should move.

Finally, after hours that seemed much longer to me than to the rest of the world, I found out this afternoon that Joshua was hired and we will be moving!! I am going to be insanely busy if we're to be all packed and out of the house in a week!!

Okay, I've babbled on long enough. THANK YOU to all who prayed for us, commented or emailed with words of wisdom and encouragement, or offered to help us. I really can't express how great it feels to know that there's already family members, a church (Joshua's former church), old friends, and new friends (some of YOU!!) waiting there for us. :)

Now, for the next challenge: packing only what will fit in a 950 sq. ft. apartment. I thought our house was ~950 sq. ft. but either it's measured differently or else having a garage helps with storage. Any tips are more than welcome!! :)

Your move.

Good luck. I'm sure you are overwhelmed right now. How is your family in Ohio handling this?

Tammy's picture

I think everyone is both

I think everyone is both happy for us and sad that we'll be leaving. :(

Congratulations!

Tammy, that's wonderful! The Lord's timing was indeed perfect!

It must be great to have little doubt about whether you should stay in Ohio. Now that you know there won't be a job, it's got to be much easier to know the will of God.:)

Pace yourself with the packing...and drink lots of water. Dehydration can cause fatigue.

The Seattle area is beautiful and milder in the winter. I'm sure you will love it!

All the best, Joyce

Yay!!!

Yay, so happy for you and your family. God is so good. And what an awesome witness you are for Him...He really does have the best plans for us in mind, doesn't He?
I hope you are able to pack up quickly and before you know it, you will be in your new home!

God blesses you immeasurably!!!

Jamie, PA

Congrats on the job! I will

Congrats on the job! I will be praying for you as your family transitions into a new home and job. :D

Congratulations!

I'm rejoicing with you! I love to hear stories of how God provides at just the right time!

I'll keep your family in my prayers - as I know that the next few weeks will be busy, busy, busy. But I'm sure that you'll be posting more stories of God's goodness in the weeks to come!

Congratulations on the new job and best wishes for a smooth transition.

Congrats!

It's so wonderful to KNOW that you are in the center of God's will. What an exciting and busy time!

Here are my best storage tips:
Put your beds on risers, and use under-bed storage for toys, out of season clothes, etc.

If you don't have any of the compression bags, put compressable items (bedspreads, sweaters and clothes, etc.) in trash bags and gather them up and then press the air out of them (finish with your seal a meal maybe?) and tie up...then pack in boxes.

Declutter as much as you can while you pack...keep trash bags handy and just fill as you go. Schedule to have them picked up by a charitable organization.

If you don't have bunk beds, those help save lots of space. Or you could even do a roll-out trundle for the kids.

Some of my friends pulled their couch out from the wall about 2 1/2 feet, and utilized the space behind it as a make shift playroom. The toys stay out of site, but it's a nice big spot for the kids to play or read.

Wow!

Nine days. I can't even imagine being in your shoes right now. You must be excited and nervous all at the same time. I know I would be! I'll be praying.

We'll Miss You!

Tammy - I know I don't see you often now, but it was nice to catch up when we could get together. Those times will probably be very few after you move, however I'm so glad that God has opened doors and is guiding your paths to where He wants you! You'll be missed here in Ohio though! I'll be praying for you as you pack & move across the country!

Willa

Wow!

That's amazing! Best wishes for a great move. I'm hoping someday God will work in our lives so we can move closer to family.

oh man

I will miss all your great recipes while your packing. Please let us know when you are safe and sound in your new home. It does sound like GOD had a new play for the new year for you and at Rosh you were blessed with a good year.

God is amazing!

I don't know where you'll be in this area, but I live near Seattle and if you need anything please don't hesitate to ask. I've lived in this area for all but 4 years of my life, so I'm quite familiar!

I hope all goes well with your move and the new job. I'm very excited for you and your family!

This is so silly because I

This is so silly because I only "know" you through reading your blog--but when you said you were moving I immediately thought that would be so sad. But thankfully your blog will still be here and hopefully you will be settled soon and can share about your adventures with us. I hope and pray the transition will go well and be over quickly.

Congratulations!

I'll be praying for you during the packing and moving! So glad you are happy with what God had planned for you all.

YAY

YAY! Im excited for you to be moving to my area!!! I'll pray for a safe trip for your family. Dont stress too much about packing.

We live in a small home too

Tammy,
We have 7 people (the youngest is 12) in 1110sq ft. I will be happy to pass on any small space living ideas I can. The suggestions to de-clutter now are a great idea. If I had an idea of the type of space you will have, I can formulate some ideas. One thing that helps is to have all of your beds (where possible) on bed risers. It will give you at least a foot of storage under the bed. Another thing that we have that is a little different is I have bookcases all the way down the hall. It makes the hallway a little narrow, but the added storage is great. You might also put some shelves on the floor under where your clothes hang, for books or use baskets to store other items. I have white cardboard file boxes under my short hanging items, which I store material and patterns in. Maybe some of these items will spark an idea for you.

Isn't God wonderful and doesn't He work things out in the most awesome ways?!

May God bless and provide for every step of your move!

That is a neat story.

That is a neat story.

great!!!!!

it is so exciting!
I think that in the states you are used to very large housing.
For us in France it would be the average for a family of 5!
950 that is what we had with 5 childrens. It is ok as long as they are young.
After 10 years old they take up more space
We now have 1400.
God bless you!

Would that be . . .

1400 children or square feet? :-)

Moving

Me and my friend/roommate moved 700+ miles south from our Michigan birthplace. I absolutely love Alabama though.

Although there was just the two of us, we moved in a mini van and 4x8 Uhaul trailer. We moved just what we had to move, and moved no furniture. When we got down here, our van died (blew the motor) and we ended up living in a motel for 2 months. But 9 months later, the weather is awesome, we have a two bedroom apartment that the rent is based on income (only $256 maximum monthly charge + utilities), our rooms are near overflowing with furniture that either the church bought for us, we got at Salvation Army or Goodwill, or we found at curb that others threw away. Last week a church member gave us (yes for free) an older mini van. So now we have trnasportation too. I'm happier than I have been in years, I've rededicated my life to the Lord and am now active in a church. Only by God's blessings and God's will have we made it this far.

So, Tammy, I know that you and your family will be happy once your husband starts his new job, you're all moved and the dust settles. God knew what you needed even before you knew what you needed. Just remember to declutter and giveaway (freecycle.com and craigslist.com) everything you don't absolutely need. You can alway replace it when you get there. You'd be surprised what we got rid of and ended up replacing with better (even 2nd hand) once we got here!!

God Bless you and your family and my prayers are with you for safe travel and a safe move!!

Kim (Guntersville, AL)

God is so goood!

Take the bare necessities, clothes, diapers, shoes, bedding, pillows, a few favorite toys etc. If you can leave furniture, or sell it, do it. Have a garage sale, the money you make it can go towards moving or "newer" furniture. Everything can be replaced. I say this because you are moving across the country, if it was only a city away then I'd say the opposite.

By taking the bare necessities, you can acquire what you need when you get there. You'll know what you'll have room for etc. But if you pack everything, and take the furniture, you may not have room for everything. And this will also cut down on moving costs.

Good luck! I'll be continuing to pray for you all! This is so exciting, I'm very happy for you all!

Oh my goodness!

I am so excited for you! When we moved from Ohio to Maine it was such an adventure for us. I will be praying for you all during the coming days as you pack up and head out!

That is wonderful news, Tammy and family. :) We are really happy for you all. Praying that all will go well for you as you prepare for this big move. May Yahweh go with you!! I'm sad that you will be so far away now.... :( ~Tanya - mama to 5 :)

God is so good!

Wow! God is so good! My husband and I recently moved out of state and it has been the best thing that we have ever done. I read your blog every day and am very eexcited for you! Praying all goes well with the move:)My youngest was 6 weeks when we moved but I know God gave me extra grace for that time! He's so faithful! from Elizabeth at www.eafollman.wordpress.com

God is an Amazing God!

Great things can happen and much easier when we leave our decisions in Gods hands. This is a perfect example.

Nine days to move? I'll be praying for you!

Tammy,

I am so happy for you and your family! i am sure you are excited and overwhelmed. Good luck ! what a wonderful adventure this will be. God Bless

Great News!

This is awesome!

Isn't it rainy there? I know it is beautiful though. I pray that the everything else works out just as easy for you!

Your move

Our God is an Awesome God. He knows where you need to be and helps you get there. How amazing. Our prayers are with you as you pack and travel.
I am so blessed to have found this site. You have helped me form such a wonderful network of sites with fantastic believers. Marj M.

Good For You!

Even though we know God has a plan- it is sometimes hard to accept what comes our way and moving so far is a huge change! You are accepting it all with grace and that is to be admired!

I will pray for you as you pack and unpack and settle in.
What kind of job did Joshua get? Is it anything like he had?
Can't wait to hear about all that your new home is like!

Praise the Lord

Wow. I love hearing your story of praise! God is so good. Thank you for sharing!

Wow!

Oh Tammy! Goodness me! Congratulations to Joshua, and many blessings to you and the children as you pack and move. It must be a comfort at a time of leaving your wider family to know that God really orchestrated all of this for you. Much love, Lucy x

Same boat

We are in the same boat. My husband called on September 29 and said he would be starting a new job in two weeks. A week and a half later, he left for his new job. That was two weeks ago. The kids and I had to stay behind to pack, attempt to sell the house and then we will move. We hope to all be together again by Thanksgiving. It's hard with him gone, but he loves his new job and the new state we are going to.

It is scary, exciting, overwhelming and stressful, and I'm so looking forward to having Dad around the house again to help me with the 5 kids. Best of luck to you.

Wowee!

Wow. Nine days, huh?

That is an awesome story about how God brought everything about. I will pray God will give you wisdom how/what to pack!

I live in apartment with my husband and 2 daughters. I don't know our square footage, but I think it is probably less than 950.

Decluttering as you pack is a very good idea!

I am working on the whole not-having-too-much-stuff department. I would suggest praying through the packing and getting rid of duplicate items.

Best wishes and prayers to/for you! :)

Congrats!

Congratulations ans best wishes for a safe and easy move.

If 11 of us can fit into 850

If 11 of us can fit into 850 s.f. then I know that 5 of you can fit into 950! We have no basement or garage for storage. We do, however, have two sheds. My best advice is to think UP.

Use furniture that is more tall and narrow, rather than wide and short (chest of drawers instead of dresser, high bookshelves rather than short ones, etc.). As another suggested, put your beds on risers, or as we did, my husband built a loft just high enough to clear a Pack n Play crib so that we could put little ones under our bed (with an end of the crib sticking out for ingress and egress of child, of course). He made a two-step set of stairs for us to get in and out of bed. There is also room for storage under the bed. We used to have a dresser under the bed, with the front of it flush with the edge of the bed, for easy access to clothes. If your husband is handy, he can build custom-sized bunks to fit your space and your children's ages (e.g., a crib-type bunk for young ones). My husband also built shelves, not fancy, but sturdy and functional, to fit open wall space in the kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms.

I would second the suggestion to get rid of furniture here. You will have a better idea of what works for your living space once you are moved. Over the years, we have bought very little furniture anyway because the generosity of others and the goodness of the Lord has kept us supplied (even with appliances and vehicles).

You have been geographically close to me, although we've never met, so I will miss you. I'm praying for you as you think and pack and decide and keep little ones occupied over the next few days. May God go with you.

Be blessed

Be blessed as you plan your move, pack and head out west! Will be praying for safety, fun and lots of provision!!

Congratulations!

I'm so glad for you and look forward to hearing about your adventures in Seattle.

Your story brought tears to my eyes. I'm just so glad for your family that everything has worked out for the best!

What a blessing!

You are so incredibly blessed to be able to move to Seattle! We were just there in October (for the first time) and enjoyed our visit sooooo much! In spite of what I'd heard about all the rain they get there, it was absolutely gorgeous 3 out of the 4 days we were there and only rained the day we were leaving. I loved that part of it, too, though. There's just something about Seattle...:O)

God is good, ALL THE TIME! "You'll never see the righteous forsaken, or His seed begging for bread."

You're in good Hands!

Lisa

Congratulations!

I wanted to let you know that you will love the Seattle area. We live an hour outside of Seattle, but we both grew up in the area - so we are used to the weather.

Best of luck with your move and your husbands new job!

Excited for you...

Happy for you! Just remember, if your moving expenses aren't covered by the company in WA, that you should save your receipts because they should be tax deductible.
Blessings to you folks as you prepare to move.

Congratulations!

What a move! As someone who has lived in small spaces most of my life except now when God provided a very large house for us, i have lots of tips. i also moved alot!
Get rid of lots of stuff, save furniture that is generally expensive to replace, books and sentimental items, think everything else through really carefully! Think of how often you use it, how hard it is to move and how expensive it would be to replace.
When you pack, make sure to mark the boxes well. When we moved alot, we numbered the boxes and then kept a list of what was in each box. it made life much easier!
Bunkbeds are what we grew up on! i know some people are scared of them, but they are not bad. Two little ones sharing a twin bed is not bad either! Three of us slept in a double bed when we lived in Seattle in a two bedroom apt. My brother was in a crib in our room.
My mom did get into trouble because she hung clothes on the balcony on a clothes rack. She was fined for it being unsightly, so ask before assuming things like that are okay! (this was in Kirkland)
i hope the move goes well, if you are driving through Mt and happen to be coming through my town, let me know if you need a place to sleep!

How exciting- God is good!

That's so great, Tammy! I'm sure you will love being in the Seattle area! We are also from the Northwest, but we're Canadian (Vancouver area, about 3 hours north of Seattle) and my husband's family lives in Federal Way/Auburn area (slightly south of Seattle). We love it there!

You know, a garage really does make a huge difference for storage compared to an apartment, but you're so creative and resourceful- I am sure that you will find a way to make it work. You must be so busy- take care of yourself this next week or two, ok?

Happy Moving!
Stephanie @ Keeper of the Home

Moving!

We moved 11 times. It isn't always easy but as the mother you can make it work. Be cheerful. It takes a long time to know an area. The Seattle area is beautiful. Let us know if you can get a garden to grow in the NW!

Congratulations, Tammy!! I

Congratulations, Tammy!! I am so happy for you.

So close!

We will be right across the water from you! Who knows, you'll probably run into some of my family depending on what area of Seattle (or greater) you are living in?! That is too fun. What a cool story of God's provision!

1st to Open Box

My only suggestion to add to all the other wonderful ideas is to pack a first to open box. This box will contain everything you have to have for the first night...sheets for the beds so that you can go to sleep, toilet paper, shower curtain, bathing supplies....considering you don't know what will be going on you need to make sure that you have all these things handy. That way you are able to quit unpacking at any time and still be able to function in the new place. I look forward to hearing about your move. Congrats!

Yes, we did this! All of

Yes, we did this! All of what she mentioned above plus paper plates, plastic silverware, paper towels, our pillows, and my husband's tools.

God's Hand

Hi Tammy,

I just read your news about moving!I'm so excited for you!

Wow, this is fast, but sometimes God moves quickly. Isn't it wonderful to know our Heavenly Father cares so much and goes to such great lengths to work on our behalf -- to provide for us, everything we need, just when we need it?

I will be praying for your family during this time,

Blessings,

Wow, that's exciting news!!

Wow, that's exciting news!! :)
And really QUICKLY too... amazing!
I'm sure it's taking a while to sink in that it's reality now, isn't it?
And it's a BIG move too.
But everyone has given you some great tips for packing up and God will be with you. I'll be praying that the trip goes well and for your safety.
God is so amazing, isn't He? Wow, to have things fall into place like that... it's His plan, without a doubt, isn't it? Praise Him!!

Good luck!

I'm late commenting. Good luck with the move. Make it a great move and it will be! (Especially in 6 months when it is a memory. LOL)

Praising and Rejoycing!

Praising God with you! How great he is and how happy I am so to see his kindness in your life! Praise the Lord!

Glad to hear you made it

Exciting that you're now in Seattle (it's a lot easier to get to than Tiffin). We might be planning a trip up there in early DEC. If we do, we'll keep you informed. Hope you find everything well and not too wet (or grey. :)
