Breakfasts from my childhood: Popcorn cereal!

Popcorn cereal

Last week, I made a quick trip to the store with Ruth in tow. The boys and their daddy were here at home, just hanging out.

When I got back, my largest stainless steel bowl was sitting on the kitchen counter, and it was piled high with popcorn! I guess the boys had asked for some popcorn, so Joshua made them some. And then he made extras since he's nice like that. :) (Oh, the fun of having an air popper!)

Normally I would have grabbed a stick of butter, melted it, drizzled it all over that big bowl of popcorn, and sat down for a gigantic snack. However, that's not really an option when you're counting calories... :P :)

I remembered Popcorn Cereal from my childhood, and decided that was what we would do with all that popcorn!

My boys had never eaten popcorn cereal before, but they loved it! I was surprised that it really was as good as I had remembered. :) (Check out the recipe for step-by-step photos -- as if it were complicated...) ;)

Joshua never had popcorn cereal as a child. Have you ever had it? Did/do you like it?

Something new to try

I have never even heard of this before, but I will most definitely be trying this out...tonight it possible! That looks good!

How interesting, I've never

How interesting, I've never heard of it!

:D that is funny

I think that is really funny. But, wouldn't that be interesting to try. Especially if you're out of cereal. Who would have ever thought about having Popcorn Cereal. I loved the tutorial - funny and VERY difficult - LOL!

weird....in a good way

How strange, I love all things popcorn but have never heard of this. Sounds like a must try! Thanks!

Yep!

Yep, definitely had that once for a special party at school in the 4th grade. We had "popcorn week" and ate popcorn in all kinds of unusual ways. :-)

I've never heard of it

I've never heard of it either. Interesting.

Um, no. Never heard of it.

Um, no. Never heard of it. We used to eat banana cereal. Same idea, cut them up and throw some milk on them.

Too Funny!

I have never heard of popcorn cereal! Hmmm...I might have to give it a try sometime. And I agree, air poppers are the best. I still have my air popper that I took to college with me - in 1985! We use it fairly often - so much cheaper and healthier than microwave popcorn.

We have popcorn cereal also.

We have popcorn cereal also. The kids love it!!

OMG!

No, I have never heard of it! I have to admit that it does sound delicious...sprinkle on some sugar...yum-my! I will be making a point to try it, for sure.

Hmmm?

This sounds so weird I have to try it! I think we will have this for dinner tonight. It is just my children and I tonight.

Thanks! I can't wait to see their faces.

Tomorrow's breakast

I just showed my kids your recipe and they want to try it right now! I going to make them wait until tomorrow morning. I never even thought of popcorn for breakfast.

not here

Never have, not sure I would like soggy popcorn... :)~Tanya - mama to 5 :)

Weird!

This is quite possibly the strangest thing I've ever read!
Maybe someday when I'm not pregnant and my gag reflex isn't activated by the thought of eating even a banana, much less popcorn cereal, then I'll give it a try. :)

we could try it

I am sure this is not too different than the puffed wheat we buy without sugar. I would have to make sure that it was eaten before it got soggy. None of us like soggy cereal.

fun fiber! http://www.mamabearscubhouse.com

i think this would be fun for the kids to try..and me!
it would fit in nicely for one our "Wacky Wednesday" theme days:)

Never heard of it......

But I'm filing it away in my mind for future reference. I know my kids will love to try it someday. Cereal in any form is fine dining to them :-)

sounds....

Sounds good to me!

I've never tried it but I bet its good!
I love corn, popcorn, cornbread...:-)

I read about it in the Little House on the Prairie Cook Book

But I've never tried it myself.

No air popper :o((

Okay, I totally want to try this, but alas, we have not air popper. We pop all our popcorn on the stove top. Does this mean I'm out of luck?? I guess the oil wouldn't taste good in cereal.

Popcorn with oil/butter on

Popcorn with oil/butter on it can still be used for cereal, but it isn't quite as good (in my opinion) since it does have the oil on it... you can certainly try though! I did use buttered popcorn for cereal some times as a child. :)

Popcorn cereal and more

Then see how many pieces you can drop in a glassful of milk before it overflows. You might be surprised at the answer. Science project.

Wow!

I have never heard of that either! Looks so tempting! I love cereal so much. Thanks!

different

My 3 and 4 year olds love popcorn. I thought I'd give this a shot for them today. Um...my 4 year old tried one bite and informed me this wasn't for him. He wanted the popcorn straight and dry. My 3 year old wouldn't touch it. Bummer! I thought for sure they'd go for popcorn with sugar.

LOL - my siblings and I used

LOL - my siblings and I used to do this all the time. Some of them prefer popcorn with milk rather than with salt/butter. :-D

Popcorn cereal

Okay, I was actually going to sell my air popper since it doesn't get much use. My family prefers popcorn made with coconut oil. I'm thinkin' I need to try this first before getting rid of the popper!
Thanks,
Stacy

Sort of!

We used to do the popcorn in milk experiment all the time and I really liked it! My favorite way to eat it is over ice cream though! = )
We never put butter on our popcorn though and when we pop it with a small amount of oil, it really is a low fat snack even with that little bit of fat! For me though I could just eat popcorn sometimes all day.......

Popcorn cereal

Oh that is so cool, I will have to try that. Thanks!

Air popped corn

I hope this is not "off topic" but you can make air popped corn (without oil) in the microwave. Add a tablespoon or so of popcorn kernels in a brown lunch paper bag. Fold the top several times with 1/2" folds, creasing firmly. While the bag is standing, microwave on high for about 1-2 minutes. This really works!!!!!!!!!!! A popular celebrity chef did this on television but he used staples to close the bag. I was afraid to used the metal staples so I just folded it.
