Have you heard about January's Eat From the Pantry challenge? Crystal and Jessica are challenging anyone who wants to join them in spending the month of January eating from the pantry and avoiding grocery shopping! :)
I can't wait to see what they come up with! :) Right now I'm actually working on filling our freezer/pantry for when the baby's born, but hopefully in another month or so I'll be enjoying a bit of a break. ;)
I think also that maybe since I shop mostly at Costco and only get the foods we eat on a regular basis (fresh and frozen fruits and veggies, meat, dairy, and occasional non-perishables) and don't get the "sales", I don't end up with as many "odds and ends" to use up. :)
For example, the items in my weekly grocery shopping photos are nearly all things we were running out of or would use within 7-10 days. I don't have to watch for a sale and buying as-needed helps keep my fridge and pantry streamlined. :) I know I am not getting rock-bottom prices on everything we buy but I am happy with the lack of stress when it comes to shopping! And I'm almost always satisfied that we're eating nutritious food. :D

I shop the same way, Tammy,
I shop the same way, Tammy, buying only what we need for the next week or two, so I rarely have "extras" in my pantry. I don't have the room, for one, to store lots of foods, and we eat so many fresh foods that they would just go bad. We don't buy a lot of canned or boxed goods, as you know!

Boxed/canned foods
I guess we really don't use a lot of canned or boxed foods, either... and the years have taught me how much I should stock up on a good sale on tea, pasta, etc. so I don't end up storing things too long! I do use dry things like beans and grains but those weren't exactly "on sale", just purchased in bulk for using in my regular cooking/baking. :)
I did organize my pantry earlier this week, and put a couple things aside to be used rather than forgotten -- some in-shell peanuts (the kids love these but the floor needs vacuumed afterward!) and some mixed nuts, which are our "snack" options. :) But that was it! :)
I think a good "side effect" of shopping at Costco is that we rarely have "junk food" in our house, since it's not "a couple dollars" here and there, but $5+ for each item... after filling our cart with the good food we need, I know the total is already going to be high! :| :)
I also find that we're not used to processed food as much as in the past. A number of months ago I found a good sale on "Honey Bunches of Oats" cereal but unless we mixed it with about 2/3 granola or high fiber/protein cereal, it was way too much sugar and not enough nutrients :| :) We slowly used it up, but honestly... it's not on my list of "things to watch for on sale" because we're used to higher quality/healthier breakfast cereals. :| :)
1x a week I use the pantry
I shop similarly to you - very few processed foods. We do have some cans though: canned salmon and tuna, diced tomatoes, a few cans of beans (usually I make and freeze my own but these are for emergencies), refried black beans, etc. We also have some (gluten-free) grains like quinoa, various whole grain rices, brown rice pasta, etc.
Instead of dedicating a whole month to using up the pantry, I usually have 1-2 days per week where I try to make a meal that solely relies on what I already have in the pantry (I meal plan before grocery shopping). Some of the pantry meals I can think of off the top of my head include pancakes for dinner (we have several variations, including dutch babies, our recent favorite!), eggs with refried beans and salsa, tuna or salmond and crackers/crudite or salmon patties, sometimes rice and beans, sometimes pasta with sauce and beans, etc.
boxed/canned foods
I do a lot of the same things you ladies do. I don't buy a lot of processed foods. Try to make mine as much as possible from scratch. I don't like all of the "fake" flavoring you get with processed foods. I agree with the cereals as well. When my husband and I do go out to eat sometimes we look at each other and say it's just not as good as a home cooked meal. So we rarely eat out anymore. :) My husband is a picky eater which doesn't help , but i am slowly getting him introduced into new foods. :) My son is a great eater, not picky at all.
We use a lot of rice and pastas. I keep beans, rice, etc. I also meal plan before I go shopping, which I find as a great help.
Same thing
I find it's much less stressful to simply buy the quantities we need of healthful foods and not worry about every sale. And also don't end up with bits of stuff so much anymore. We don't have Costco here, but buy a few items at Sam's and most foods at the commissary, other than raw milk and our meat, and eggs, which we provide ourselves.
week two..on a roll!!
So Ive taken the challenge and we are now going on week two, I have only bought things that we "need" and I even took the challenge of $75 dollar Grocery budget, so far I've only spent $38 dollars (after coupons and sales) and $37 more to go! Im Still in Shock!!!
our monthly grocery budget is usually around $300 Scary!!. I have been doing a lot of homemade meals And stretch one meal to the next, and we took your advice Tammy and I made Pancakes for the kids and froze them, they are perfect!! We also try to stay away from all the "candies" and junk food so its been rather slim on our Pantry but our Freezer is full and Ive been getting receipes from your site daily!! Thanks for keeping your site going!! :) and thanks for posting the Challenge!!
