Frugal Fridays: Dresser drawer scents

We like our clothing to have a pleasant scent, but we don't use the normal scented laundry detergent (or fabric softener). We also dry our clothes outside, so we don't use dryer sheets of any sort. But we do buy bath soap that is scented!

So, when we buy bath soap, I put the (wrapped) bars in various dresser drawers or anywhere that is child-safe where we want a good smell!

Then whenever we need a bar, I rummage around and get one to use in the shower. When I get low, I buy a new supply, and store them in the dressers again. :D I usually get a different kind each time I buy a package, because I like variety :D.

That's a great idea!

I love this idea...we are also line drying clothes but I have REALLY missed the smell of fabric softener. I'm going to look next time
I go to shop and see what kinds of soap I can find!

Thanks for the suggestion!

Wow! I would have never thought of this - not in a hundred years. You are so smart and creative!

wonderful idea

That is a good idea!! What if they come in a box, would that still work. Depending which soap I get they come in their own little cardboard package. You are so creative!! :) I think clothes smell nice when I bring them in from the line. :) So fresh and clean smelling, most of the time, once in a while a local farmer may be spreading manure, then I will bring the wash in before they smell like that. :) ~Tanya

Soap in boxes

Yes, Tanya, I do the same thing with soap that is individually wrapped in boxes, too. Basically whether it's wrapped in a waxy sort of paper wrapping, or in little boxes, I just stick the (wrapped) bars in the drawers until we need them! :)

Joshua and I both don't think that clothes that is dried outside smells wonderful! I know lots of people (including our next door neighbor lady!) who love the smell. I don't love it, but I don't hate it... Joshua can't stand it! Add to that the fact that I've been using my homemade (scentless) detergent... :| I should buy some lavendar oil! :)

I learned to use soap like

I learned to use soap like this from my Dad years ago... it is a great way to keep bugs out of the drawers instead of using Moth balls. I just throw a couple of bars in clothes that I have stored for the winter or in closets in the house.
They make everything smell so much better than when you pull out the winter coats, and they do not smell like then have been in storage. They are also so much cheaper than buying Cedar blocks!

agreed

For years my mom used a certain brand of rose-scented soap, so we kids always got her some for her birthday and Christmas, so she always had extra in her dresser drawers. She only has two drawers (she hangs the rest of her clothes), but her socks and unmentionables always smelled lovely.

Variation on this idea learned from Mom

Growing up I can remember Mom finding ways to make everything last longer. We never had much extra money, but we always had what we needed. One of her "tricks" was to open the packages on the bars of soap as soon as she brought them home from the store. Although I knew that she did things like that to save money, she passed away when I was 16 and I never thought at that time to ask her what exactly that did to save money. After learning to make my own soap and through years of using bar soap, I have learned that it actually dries the soap out or "cures" the bar so that it is in a hardened state that is more resistant to that little puddle of water that always turns the soap to mush in the shower. When soap starts to "mush" and doesn't re-harden between uses, it doesn't last as long. I decided to take it a step farther. Since I love the smell of certain bar soaps, I "cure" them in my dresser drawers or in the off-season clothing storage tubs. I do leave the soap in the box, but I open the end so that the soap will harden and my clothing will also pick up the scent of the soap! It is a great way to save money, smell great and keep the moths away!
