Easy Homemade Cheese Ball recipe

This week's featured recipe has been a family favorite since my growing-up years. My mom makes this Easy Homemade Cheese Ball for snacks, family gatherings, finger-food-fellowships, and to give away as gifts!

Served with wheat crackers, Ritz brand snack crackers, or even pretzels, this rich and flavorful homemade cheese ball is easy to make and stores well. Paired with a box of crackers, it makes a perfect gifts for neighbors, co-workers, or family, or friends.

My mom often served this on Sunday evenings as part of a "snack supper" of freshly popped popcorn and other goodies. If you need a quick and delicious autumn appetizer treat, try this Easy Homemade Cheese Ball!

Question about the cheese

Do you just grate the cheddar cheese before you mix it with the cream cheese? We love cheese balls, and it seems so simple to make!! Our favorite kind is a "port wine cheese ball." Any idea how to make one of those?

Rachel - a faithful, drooling reader :o)

Cheeseball clarification!

Rachel,

Yes! I do grate the cheese! I can't believe I forgot to put that in! Thanks for mentioning it to me. :) I went added that to the recipe just now. :)

I haven't had a port wine cheese ball, but I have had port wine cheese. I am guessing you could make a port wine cheese ball by substituting the cheddar cheese with port wine cheese. The meat part is optional. So, for example: 8 ounces port wine cheese + 8 ounces cream cheese; mix together and roll in chopped nuts. If I remember right, port wine cheese is soft, so it might not even need grated. Just mix with your hands.

I found a recipe for a cheese spread that calls for port wine, but I imagine it contains alcohol since the wine is added to the cheese mixture. (Port wine cheese doesn't, to my knowledge, contain alcohol.) :)

Oooh yummmm

I guess I'm a true Wisconsin girl when I say this, but....

I LOVE CHEESE!

This recipe looks so yummy, I'm going to make it this week for the hubby to take to work for an office snack.

Also, fontina cheese is a wonderful cheese to use in cheese balls as well. Creamy, cheesy, and oh so delicious. :)

We like cheese, too!

Andrea, we are really into cheese here, too :D I like it when it goes on sale so we can use lots of cheddar in our foods... and of course mozzarella for pizza :D

Cheese cheese cheese....

I don't think I know of one person that doesn't like cheese....I mean, I have a few friends that are lactose intolerant, but even they eat cheese...

I've actually taken to freezing cheese when it is on sale. It freezes beautifully, and it thaws relatively quick too!

Sharp cheddar and colby are my husband's cheese choices...I'm a little more, well, I'm a cheese snob. I love emmenthaler, fontina, irish cheddar, port wine, Windsor red, mozzarella...you name it, I love it! (I suppose the Sicilian in me prefers Bufalo mozzarella the most, but I'd be lying if I said I loved it all the time.. ;) )

Then again, there's nothing better than a homemade cheese ball. The recipe my mom gave me has turkey bacon in it. Yum-o!

For this cheese ball, is it

For this cheese ball, is it hollow or well, filled? I'm thinking of making it. :) Do you have to cut it up before eating?

Cheeseball question answered:

Victoria, the cheeseball is solid. You mix up the ingredients and then form it into a solid ball. You can serve it with a small knife beside it and people just cut off some of the cheeseball and put it on crackers to eat! :D

Andrea, I freeze cheese, too, particularly mozzarella, which we found through our pizza experimentation, tasts MUSH better fresh (or frozen until needed) than saved in the refrigerator for a few weeks, even if the package does have a long expiration date! What is your favorite pizza cheese/combination of cheeses?

Pizza combos...

Well...My personal favorite is actually an entire pizza... pizza crust with sweet roma tomatoes on top (chopped or sliced), with sliced bufalo mozzarella melted, and then sprinkled with chopped fresh basil and freshly grated parmigano reggiano (or romano...).

I've also been known to toss cheddar and mozz on a cheeseburger pizza.

The hubby likes bleu cheese and mozz on his Buffalo Chicken Pizza.

Then again, pizza is part of my 4 food groups. ;) So, I don't think I've met a pizza I don't like yet....

Your 'white' pizza is on the menu for tomorrow night, actually. :) I'm really looking forward to that!

Sounds like you're the cheese expert!

I hope you like the white pizza! :)

Noo...

I just live in THE Dairy State. ;) You can't not like dairy products and live in Wisconsin! ;)

Oh, I'm sure I'll love the pizza. I haven't met a pizza I didn't like! ;)
